Marriage isn't failing because couples don't know how to communicate.

It's struggling because most of us are trying to build equal relationships on a patriarchal foundation, spoiler alert, that foundation is inherently unequal.

In She Works for Free, I examine the invisible systems that continue to organize modern marriage—from emotional labor and the mental load to power, gender expectations, and the relationship scripts we inherit without realizing it. Drawing on more than fifteen years of working with couples, I challenge readers to look beyond communication problems and other symptoms of relationship distress and examine the system underneath them. By making these hidden scripts visible, readers can begin to question what they have inherited, understand how those patterns are shaping their relationships, and recognize the agency they have to create something different.

This isn't a book about blaming men or abandoning marriage. It's about understanding how patriarchy has shaped us all so we can build relationships rooted in equality, curiosity, shared responsibility, and genuine partnership.

Because if we don't name the system, we can't change it.
